250th Anniversary Quilt Deadline!

As America prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday, there’s no better place to honor this milestone than Virginia’s Historic Triangle—Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown. Visit Williamsburg is uniting the nation one stitch at a time through The Great American Birthday Quilt, a project that invites people from across the country to contribute handcrafted blocks for a lasting tribute to our nation.

The completed quilt will be revealed in Williamsburg in 2026 and permanently displayed at the Colonial Williamsburg Visitor Center, where it can be admired for generations to come.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Design Direction

Each quilt block should illustrate what you want to celebrate most about America. You can take inspiration from anywhere, such as inspiring people (past and present), places you love, iconic landmarks, famous quotes and historic events.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Quilt blocks must be exactly 12" x 12", 12" x 14", 16" x 16", or 16" x 20%.

  • Quilt blocks can be made from any type of fabric.

  • Quilt blocks can be sewn or glued together.

  • Only fabric glue that adheres to muslin can be used.

  • Bonus: incorporate red, white and/or blue in each square.

  • Acceptable materials to adhere to the fabric are buttons, yarn, felt, paper, ribbon, sequins, feathers. Any other materials adhered to the fabric may result in the submission not being used in the quilt.

  • Prepare your quilt block for shipping by wrapping in plastic.

Once complete, blocks can be mailed to the address below for storage and assembly by November 30, 2025. We accept all major shipping methods, including USPS, UPS, and FedEx. All packages must be sent with postage prepaid. We do not provide or reimburse shipping labels or postage costs.

Mail Completed Quilt Blocks to:

Visit Williamsburg

Attn: Selena Coles

421 North Boundary Street

Williamsburg, VA 23185

Terms: All quilt blocks are subject to review. Quilt blocks can be rejected if they do not meet standards for design or appropriate content or are not received before the submission deadline.

We are proud to serve as a drop off location for your finished blocks! Stop by the shop to drop off your block! Our shop is not open on Sunday, 30 November 2025, but stop by the shop when we are open (and before the deadline) to drop off your finished block!

Sweatshirt Jacket Workshop

Sweatshirt Jacket Workshop

Sweatshirt Jacket Workshop

Instructor: Ann Czompo

This is a 2 day class. Price of workshop includes both days and the pattern.

“Sweatshirt fun for everyone! Turn a sweatshirt into a stunning vest, jacket, or pullover in your choice of colors and prints. Repurpose a favorite sweatshirt with pretty fabric scraps! Learn Gail’s sew and shrink, raw-edge patchwork technique. Don’t pre-shrink your fabric or sweatshirt - washing and during frays the patches and creates wonderful texture. You’ll be amazed at how your sweatshirt gets transformed in the process!” -Gail Abeloe of Brookshire Design Studio

Supplies for this project:

Pattern: I Can’t Believe It’s A Sweatshirt!, designed by Gail Abeloe. #07753 - The price of the workshop includes the purchase of the pattern.

Sweatshirt - Select a sweatshirt with set-in sleeves, a size or two larger than you would normally wear. If you are tall you might want to get a man’s sweatshirt which will likely be longer in the body and sleeves.

Sewing machine (with cord, foot pedal, bobbins, manual, presser feet, and 1/4” foot or preferred way to create a 1/4” seam allowance). Lubricating the machine and a new needle (12/80 or 14/90 microtex, sharp, or topstitch. Because you are sewing on a knit, a stretch needle 14/90 might be useful if stitching is uneven or skipping stitches) recommended.

Rulers & Mat: Recommend 18” x 24” mat minimum with guide or lines marked on the mat, and 6” x 24” ruler. Rotary cutter with new blade.

General: scissors, seam ripper, lots of regular pins, 3-4 spools of thread matching the sweatshirt.

Fabric:

8 Fat Quarters (18” x 22”) or 1/4 yards of different fabrics (color, texture, scale of design). Coordinated bundles are great. Or go crazy and use a variety of scraps.

1 yard fabric for binding, if you wish to do that. You can also sew the ribbing back onto the sweatshirt neck and sleeve cuffs.

DO NOT PRE-WASH THE SWEATSHIRT OR FABRIC! The texture of the jacket comes after the fabrics are sown to the sweatshirt, and it is machine washed and dried.

As always we encourage you to shop your stash! However, if you would need/want something for class, you will get a 15% discount at the shop for any class supplies!

A Bargello is a quilt made by sewing long, narrow strips of fabric together to create a wavy, tapestry-like design that appears to have movement. If you can sew a straight seam, you can do this! Ann, will guide us throw her favorite method to achieve this beautiful quilt!

Supplies for this quilt:

Sewing machine (with cord, foot pedal, bobbins, manual, presser feet, and 1/4” foot or preferred way to create a 1/4” seam allowance). Lubricating the machine and a new needle (12/80 microtex, sharp, or topstitch) recommended.

Rulers & Mat: Recommend 18” x 24” mat minimum with guide or lines marked on the mat, and 6” x 24” ruler.

Small paper squares, post it notes, etc., to label columns and rows.
