Building an Attic Window

Happy Friday to you all!

As I have been piecing my Attic Window together for an upcoming class, I remembered that several of you have wanted to see how I break down and piece the blocks together. Therefore, I took some pictures and will walk you through just how I did it! These steps are after the panel is squared and cut into blocks. I also enjoy cutting up all the different parts before I begin to assemble everything. This makes things go much faster! The number of blocks and the size of the blocks you have may be different. However, the process is the same. So….let’s get this started!

First Step

First, I sew all the rectangles that go on the bottom of the panel block. In this quilt it is the white fabric. Then, I place all the blocks on my design board in the correct position. Keeping things organized helps a ton for this kind of project. I do suggest taking a picture of the panel before you cut it. That way, if things get mixed up, you have a picture to guide you in putting it back together.

Step 2

Place the left strip next to each block. In this quilt it is the brown with a white tip. Again, it is keeping things organized. It also allows me to double check that I have enough strips made, as each panel block should have a strip.

Step 3

Then, I simply stitch each left strip to the panel block. I usually pull one row at a time, and chain piece them. Press and get the next row, and repeat. Keeping things simple!

Part 4

The next step is to add the black sashing! For the first column, place sashing strips on both left and right. All the other panel blocks have the black sashing only stitched on the right side.

Part 5

Once the vertical sashings have been stitched in place, we then add the horizontal sashings. The bottom row has black sashing stitched on top and bottom of each panel block. The other 15 panel blocks only need sashing stitched to the top! Whew!

Vu la!!!

Once you finish step 5, the last part of the assembly is to piece your blocks into rows with your favorite method. Then, your quilt top is officially a finished topper!!!! This is ready to be quilted! Whoohoo!

Until next time, may you continue to be inspired, productive, and ever “sew” joyful! And never stop making your dreams in quilting come true!!!

Happy Quilting!

XOXO-
